Bealtaine in Offaly Libraries

The Bealtaine festival  which celebrates creativity as we age gets underway next week in Offaly Libraries. In this European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, we are asking you ‘What kind of old do you want to be?’ Do you want to be

  • A dancer?
  • A painter?
  • A film-maker?
  • A poet?
  • An historian?

This is a month long festival and there are many events organised around Offaly by the Library Service, active retirement groups and local community groups.

The following events will be taking place in Offaly Libraries during the festival:

  • Annual Table Quiz for Clara Leading Active Retirement Group, Clara Libray, 2nd May 2:30-4:30pm (organised by Clara Library)
  • Ferbane Art Group Exhibition Launch, Ferbane Library, 3rd May 6:30pm, Exhibition Launched by Marcella Corcoran Kennedy, T.D. and runs for the month of May (organised by Ferbane Art Group)
  • Art Demonstration, Edenderry Library, 9th May 6-8pm, Local Artist, Eamonn Byrne will demonstrate how to paint a portrait. (organised by Edenderry Library)
  • Afternoon of Music in the Library, Clara Library, 16th May 2:30-4:30pm (organised by Clara Leading Active Retirement Group)
  • A Talk on Photography, Edenderry Library, 16th May 7pm, by local Photographer Robert Smyth (organised by Edenderry Library)
  • Poetry Performance by Patrick Carton, Tullamore Library, 17th May 3:30pm, Clara Library, 17th May, 7pm Patrick Carton is a performance poet and storyteller from Horseleap. He will recite a rhyme, tell a story and maybe even sing a bar of a song for you. It is bound to be entertaining. Admission is free and all are welcome.
  • A morning with your local T.D., - Marcella Corcoran-Kennedy, Birr Library, 25th May, 11am - This is an informal meeting with your local T.D., followed by a question and answer session on the current issues concerning people in the community. All welcome.
  • Evening of Music, Storytelling and Song, Ferbane Library 17th May 6:30pm
  • Craft Display by Active Retired People, Daingean Library, All Month, includes woodcraft, crochet, knitting etc. (organised by Daingean Library)
  • Display of Artwork by TARA, Tullamore Library, All Month (organised by Tullamore Active Retired Association)
  • Display of Work, Ferbane Library, All Month, Knitting Group and Ferbane Art Group Exhibitions.
  • Free access to Internet for over 55s in all libraries in Offaly for the month of May.
