Changes to One Click Digital eAudiobooks Service

We would like to inform you of some important updates to the One Click Digital service:

File Format Change to Unprotected:  This week we have converted the majority of our titles to unprotected MP3 format.  This means that the files are compatible with all computers and media playing devices and can also be transferred to storage devices such as memory sticks and SD cards via manual download.  This will greatly improve access for your members.  Today, Unprotected content represents at least 81% of the content in your collection (depending on what you have signed up to), and we will continue to increase the volume of Unprotected files in your One Click collections over the coming months including new releases.

Genre Searches:  This feature has been updated with the ‘Target Audience’ feature allowing you to filter the genres by Adult, Children, or Young-Adult categories.  You can find this on the right-hand menu after key word searches (search with no entry to see all availability) or the advanced search option.

Media Manager Upgrade:  There will be an update to the Media Manager on Tuesday 29th May to improve functionality and ease of use for your members. Your borrowers will be prompted to make this upgrade to the media manager when they sign-in and to get the best from the service it is important that they accept upgrade.  The upgrade is fully automated and takes just a minute or two.  The update includes a refresh function allowing a simpler transfer of files between the website and media player.

Artist Eamonn Byrne demonstrates how to paint a portrait for Bealtaine 2012

On Wednesday 9th May Eamonn Byrne demontrated how to paint a portrait to a highly appreciative audience of 16 artists and would be artsits alike. Using a photograph of the actor Clint Eastwood, Eamonn demonstrated and explained  the finer points of portraiture.

Wexford born, Eamonn has been working as an enthusiastic amateur for more than forty years. Charcoal, pastel and acrylic are his preferred mediums. He is largely self-taught but has studied portraiture with Dublin based artist, Donal Murray in the past year.

While he has worked on landscape/seascape mostly of his native coastline, he has always returned to portraiture and figurative work. Capturing the essence of the characters he paints in as free and loose a style as possible is what brings the work along.

Public Consultation Choral Music and the Wider Music Sector

Location, Date & Time: Tullamore Library on Thursday April 26th at 6pm.

Offaly County Council is embarking on a public consultation process on the future shape, needs, direction and ambitions of the choral music sector in Offaly.

We are working in tandem with Westmeath County Council in this process with an overall aim to apply for funding to the Music Generation Scheme in 2012. Music Generation is Ireland’s new National Music Education Programme funded by U2 and The American Ireland Funds. The application process is on a competitive basis and if successful there will be opportunities for young people to be involved in a planned music education programme in Offaly and Westmeath.

With this in mind we are hoping to consult with you and/or your group. This process is open to anyone and everyone involved in music who would like to participate in the process including parents, music educators, teachers, musicians, young people and members of the community.

An open public consultation forum will take place in Tullamore Library on Thursday April 26th at 6pm. If you are unable to make this meeting, we would also be delighted to facilitate your group with an individual targeted focus meeting directly with your group. Please let us know your availability and we will arrange a suitable and convenient time for you.

Celebrate ‘The Pick of Dickens’ at Tullamore Library!

Offaly County Library Service invites you to celebrate World Book Night 2012 (Monday, April 23rd) with a special event in Tullamore Library.

The Pick of Dickens is an open evening of readings from the works of Charles Dickens.  You are invited to come along and share your favourite Dickens line, page or chapter with others or simply sit back and listen! You don’t need to be a Dickens expert to take part, all you need to get involved is a small piece of his writing that you’d like to share or an interest in hearing the words of one of the English language’s  great storytellers read aloud. Individuals or groups are welcome.

2012 is the bi-centenary of the birth of Charles Dickens who is the creator of a treasure-trove of classic works including A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and a cast of characters who have become household names. His novel A Tale of Two Cities is one of the 25 titles on this year’s World Book Night booklist.

The event starts at 8.00pm and admission is free and all are welcome!
